Top 5 Scenes by Kitty May Gruchelska
I’d love to share my five favourite scenes from the book with you today. It’s always hard to choose because each scene has its purpose, merits or quicks. After some deliberation, I finally settled on a top five, although there were many that I enjoyed writing, and still gain pleasure from reading them.
So, let’s begin in reverse order.
Number Five: Fitzy and his dad meet Steven Sherlock. This sequence is at the end of the second part and brings it to a conclusion. Each part, or serving, has its own mini-cliffhanger. The whole chapter, or portion, is called ‘Tools of the Trade.’ What I love about this scene is the parallels between the seagull world and the hooman one, namely the references to the CSI crime series. I think the humour is delightful, along with the quirky tools, such as poop splatter examination kits and his secret drawer of paraphernalia. Its charm lies within its appeal to children with the secret agency feel, but adults will appreciate the CSI parallels.
Number Four: Fitzy and Charlie become detectives. I like this one because it’s a fun scene that kick starts the CIA’s mission. I added an element of suspense when they lose the spyglass, but I also think Charlie’s excitement and taking the task too seriously adds to the scene’s whimsical appeal.
Number Three: The CIA meets Steven Alexei. When trying to find the Deny the Fry colony, Fitzy and friends visit a seemingly hostile character to ask for assistance. This scene mixes some humour that children will enjoy, such as his scary beach barricades and potato missile launcher, but adults will appreciate the references to an old British comedy series and film (I’m not giving away the secret here!)
Number Two: The battle in Stefano Giacomo’s factory. I love how the elements draw together to create a real culinary catastrophe and a ‘carbogeddon’ for the seagull mafia boss. The scene blends an aerial battle with some suspense, but also a resounding message about teamwork in rising to a challenge. There’s also a hidden allegory for the adults!
Number One: Fitzy and friends meet a hooman. For my favourite scene, I chose a portion, or chapter, that didn’t rely on action elements and focused on developing friendship. When Fitzy’s wing is injured because Stefano Giacomo tried to sabotage the mission, the CIA crew realise they need to seek help from hoomans. In this Pixar-reminiscent scene, they meet a girl called Ellie, form a bond and find an ally. She plays a key role in the climax of the book, but I love this scene because of the interaction between her and the seagulls. Its humour and natural interaction will appeal to children, who’ll delight in the interchange and seagull antics.
I hope you enjoyed my top five scenes. You may even have your own favourites. ‘Steven F Seagull & The Missing Chips’ is on offer for a super discounted price of 99 cents until the end of February, so grab it while you can.
